What Is A Thesis Statement?

A thesis statement is a concise and precise statement that encapsulates your core thesis argument. As it’s an argument, it is therefore arguable; however, your thesis statement clearly shows which ‘side’/viewpoint you’re taking. Although your thesis statement must be open to debate, you must first assert (in your thesis statement) then show (in your thesis) this to be the strongest argument available.

Thesis statements therefore give your specific perspective on a particular subject and establish the argument you will then show or ‘prove’ in your thesis (supported with appropriate evidence). Thesis statements often comprise one prominent sentence in your introduction (at the end or at the outset), though not all theses have thesis statements.

The ‘Which', The ‘What’ And The ‘Why’

Your thesis statement answers three main questions:

Exploring A Draft Thesis Statement Example

"Arsene Wenger revolutionised English football as, using sports science, he transformed the training, diet and lifestyle of players to bring much success to Arsenal (e.g. the ‘Invincibles’) in an approach subsequently emulated by many other English clubs."

Physical Education

Though not ideal, this thesis statement has a clear subject (which) and author perspective (what), and it is somewhat convincing (e.g. the process, the transformation, the success and the emulation) (why). It’s also concise and precise, gives the core but debatable argument (i.e. others may have different perspectives) yet takes a clear ‘side’/viewpoint. Also, this seemingly strong argument is one the thesis will subsequently explore, give evidence for, ‘prove’, etc. It is focused and specific, though as a criticism it is still a little vague (e.g. What other English clubs and to what level of success?).

Thesis Statements And Other Statements

Some thesis authors confuse thesis statements with other types of statements. The essence of thesis statements is your thesis argument: therefore, thesis statements are not simply facts, comments/observations or opinions.

FACT: Advertising on social media often involves different forms of and approaches to advertising than traditional printed leaflets and posters.
COMMENTS/OBSERVATIONS: These two advertising types get different results.
OPINION: Social media advertising is better than leaflets and posters.
THESIS STATEMENT (DRAFT): : Social media advertising to recruit volunteers for community tidy-up programmes leads to greater (number of respondents) and more effective (higher conversion rates of respondents) results through its ability to create immediate direct contact with specific people and generate communal interaction.

This thesis statement draft makes an argument and thus allows counter arguments or even stimulates debate. It is not one’s personal belief but is grounded in research and evidence, is detailed and focused, and shows a somewhat convincing though yet-to-be proven argument.

Summary: Thesis Statements

The above thesis statement draft examples are imperfect and many thesis statements can be reworked and developed numerous times, but when doing this consider and incorporate the above central elements of thesis statements and relate these to your thesis (also see specific elements about how to write a thesis statement). Fundamentally, ensure your thesis statement conveys your core thesis argument. If desired, you can work with me to develop both your thesis statement and your thesis.
